Every player is born with a Picks IQ of 100. Your Picks IQ can go up or down depending on the accuracy of your picks relative to other users.
As a simple example, let's say the old "Inside the NFL" crew joined Picks IQ and that they were the only people who made predictions on a Dolphins/Bengals match-up. Say Dan picked the Dolphins to win by 13, Chris picked the Bengals to win by 5, and Bob picked the Dolphins to win by 4.
If the final score were Dolphins 22 and Bengals 15 then that corresponds to the Dolphins winning by 7. This means Dan was off by 6 points, Chris was off by 12 points, and Bob was off by 3 points. The median amount off is 6 points. Bob's prediction was better than the median amount off so he would gain one IQ point. Chris's prediction was worse than the median amount off so he would lose one IQ point. Dan's prediction put him at the median amount off so his IQ is unchanged.
The exact mathematical operation performed is as follows:
1) For a particular match-up all users predictions are sorted by how far off they are from the final score result.
Bob was off by 3 points Dan was off by 6 points Chris was off by 12 points
2) The median of these numbers is determined, which in this case happens to be 6 points. Players who were more accurate than the median receive one IQ point. Players who were less accurate than the median lose one IQ point. The IQ of players who happened to pick the median amount off remains unchanged.
